Although his fame is more rooted in professional climbing athleticism than musical talent, Jason’s skills extend far beyond the vertical realm. With expertise in website design, photography, drones, video production, ropework, and writing, he wears many hats.

Jason Nelson’s professional journey includes roles as a climber, guide, husband, author, and father. While he continues to embody some of these identities, one consistent thread has been his affinity for wielding a camera. Armed with a Photography Degree from the Colorado Institute of Art, Jason’s work and accolades have found their way into numerous magazines and network television shows. Notably, he has authored and published three substantial climbing guidebooks, each exceeding 400 pages.

Jason has been the Director of Photography for JPL’s EELS Mission. Work has involved several expeditions to the Athabasca Glacier in Alberta, Canada to film the development and testing of the EELS robot which is being designed to go into glacial crevasses on far-away moons like Enceladus.

Jason has been filming the rescue equipment and training side of Harken. Work has involved filming in helicopters, hanging off of bridges, and aboard the USS Midway amongst other interesting locations.

Jason has produced several film segments about ice climbing for Lowa boots.

Jason has done a wide variety of projects for Evolv climbing. Work has involved building their website, photography, graphic design, and as a climbing ambassador.

Giving Back to the Community

Ouray Schools

Jason’s drone expertise played a pivotal role in securing a grant for the creation of a new playground for the kids in Ouray. Additionally, he has served as a climbing coach for the Ridgway/Ouray school team. Notably, Jason’s photography is prominently featured in a permanent large-scale display, adorning one of the building’s skylights.

Jason has made significant contributions to the world of climbing, whether it’s imparting climbing skills to kids in rural Mexico, coaching the local climbing team, or mentoring fellow climbers. In his local community, Jason not only equips and maintains many climbing routes but also preserves the climbing history of the area through his guidebooks, which document both the climbs and the evolution of the climbing scene.

Village of Peace Project, Ghana

Jason is gearing up for a trip to Ghana where he’ll be filming an informational video to promote and support the Village of Peace project. Spearheaded by Rochelle Norwood, this initiative revolves around land she owns on an island, serving as a venue for community events that bridge American and African cultures through music, food, and art. Among the project’s highlights is the creation of clothing by local artisans in Ghana, showcasing them at the annual Carbondale Fashion Show, and subsequently selling them in Colorado.
